POSITION: Middle School Principal
LOCATION: Portland Middle School
The Middle School Principal is responsible for the environment and education for all students in their building. The Principal recruits, supervises, and evaluates Middle School staff. She/he is responsible for student discipline and providing a safe environment for students and staff. The Middle School Principal collaborates and cooperates with Central Administration staff in curriculum, special education, technology and budgeting areas. The Middle School Principal reports to the Superintendent.
- Master’s Degree in Education Administration
- Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate for the appropriate grade levels (K-8).
- Five years of successful teaching and/or administrative experience.
- Knowledge and experience in curriculum development, alignment, and instruction
- Proven leadership in initiating and implementing school improvement goals.
- Knowledge and experience with MTSS and PBiS. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Must be familiar with State and Federal Special Education rules and regulations
- Knowledge of and experience working with the GLCE, HSCE, NGSS, C3, and CCSS.
- Knowledge of and experience with MTSS, PBiS and/or MiBLSi.
- Strong competency and familiarity with emerging technologies and their instructional management applications.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively.
- Demonstrated ability to develop positive relationships with students, parents, staff, and community.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Promote and foster a school atmosphere that is focused on high quality education, flexibility to meet student population needs, and high faculty and student morale.
- Maintain a safe and orderly learning environment including the development, implementation, enforcement, evaluation and revision of school safety drills and procedures.
- The development of the Parent/Student Handbook including yearly updates to meet the needs of the building.
- The development, implementation, evaluation, revision and reporting of the school curriculum, instruction, and assessments within the areas of General and Special Education.
- Leadership in the school MTSS and PBIS process.
- Supervises the total operation and scheduling process of Middle School students and staff, including the development of the master schedule, recruiting, hiring, assigning, and evaluation of all staff assuring that all staff are appropriately assigned within their teaching license to meet their certification and qualification for all requirements set by State and Federal regulations.
- The evaluation of all Middle School staff including all mid-term, formative, and summative evaluations, as well as the individualized development plans.
- The implementation and regulation of all School Board policies and procedures as well as all State and Federal mandates. Including the preparation and submission of all district, state and federal reporting for the Middle school.
- The development, implementation, evaluation, revision and reporting of all school improvement plans.
- Plans, coordinates, and implements all Middle School staff meetings.
- Actively involved in the Professional Learning Community (PLC) process.
- Identifies professional development needs and provides, or coordinates access to, quality professional development to meet staff needs
- Responsibilities relative to Local Board of Education:
- Attends board meetings
- Carries out board policy, rules and regulations
- Submits items of board business for the Middle School to the superintendent
- Provides narrative on business items involving the Middle School to the board when requested by superintendent
- Responsibilities Relative to Middle School Budget:
- Develops budget reports and projections
- Provides input to the development of the annual budget
- Provides input and recommendation on Middle School staffing levels
- Supervises the expenditures from the school budget
- Responsibilities Relative to Committees and Organizations:
- Maintains active involvement in professional organizations
- Serves as consultant to Superintendent
- Attends all Administrative staff meetings and all other Regional, State and Federal meetings required by the superintendent.
- Attendance at countywide principal meetings
- Maintains an active role in local and regional committees, groups, and associations
- All other duties as necessary or as directed by the Superintendent and/or the Board.

- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with parents, staff, and administrative team
- Skills in meeting facilitation and problem solving
- Ability to interpret, comprehend, and follow oral and written instructions in order to perform duties described above.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to work independently
- High level of discretion and integrity
Performance rated annually by Superintendent.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
215 day/year, non-tenure, administrative, three year contract. Benefits as per employment agreement. Salary range - $80,000 - $85,000.
